Speaking to the media at the launch, Mr. Ashim Gujral, Chairman, Moti Mahal Delux Group of Restaurants said, “Moti Mahal has a very rich legacy which was created by my Grandfather Mr. Kundan Lal Gujral, the man who gave Tandoori Chicken, Butter Chicken and Dal Makhni  to the world ! Over the years, we have continued to maintain the same highest tradition of using the best ingredients, the purest of spices and the highest standards of service to bring to our customers the same taste and hospitality which was provided by my grandfather to customers nearly a hundred years ago.”

Talking about the path-breaking and innovative approach of his grandfather on which the foundation of the success of Moti Mahal is laid, Mr. Ashim Gujral said, “Mr. Kundan Lal Gujral was born in Chakwal, in undivided Punjab. He was the first in Peshawar to dig a tandoor right in the middle of the eatery and, around 1920, Peshawar was introduced to the culinary art of Tandoori Chicken by him. It was a runaway success. However, 1947 brought the tragedy of Partition. Uncertainty faced him as he had neither money nor the resources to make a fresh start in life. He came to  Delhi to try his luck. The trail that began in Gora Bazar in Peshawar ended in Delhi’s liveliest intersection between the old city and the new – Daryaganj. There, in 1947, Mr. Kundal Lal Gujral, now on his own, identified a small thara, a little platform for a wayside cafe, to which he decided to give its original name from across the Frontier - Moti Mahal – The Palace of Pearls. Thus, a restaurant specializing in cuisine from the North West Frontier Province, Moti Mahal, made the ordinary curry a butter filled delight.”

“Over the years, Moti Mahal became a destination for Indian and foreign visitors including foreign dignitaries to sample this most innovative and popular Indian cuisine,” Mr. Gujral stated.  “The list went on to include the late US President Richard Nixon, the then Canadian Prime Minister Tierre Trudeau, the King of Nepal and Soviet leaders Alexie Kosygin, Nikolai Bulganin and Nikita Krushchev. Nearer home, Pakistan’s Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a known gourmet, became a regular visitor at Moti Mahal whenever in India. In fact, Mr. Maulana Azad, the former Education Minister, reportedly told the Shah of Iran that while in India, he must make two visits – one to the Taj Mahal and one to Moti Mahal.

Talking about the current scenario, Mr. Gujral said, “We have been successful in placing Moti Mahal on the international map with the opening of several new fine dine restaurants in important international locations. We have also successfully added various other cuisines and concepts under the umbrella of Moti Mahal Delux Hospitality.”

Giving details of Moti Mahal Delux, Panchkula, Mr. Gujral stated, “We have kept the ambience very refreshing and elegant. While Indian food has been our speciality since 92 years, equal emphasis is also placed by us in serving authentic Chinese and Thai delicacies as well. Another good news is that the prices are also pocket-friendly in comparison to various good restaurants in the tri-city.
